MINI. Transportation of the Future.

Breif:
August 26th, 2009 marks the 50th Anniversary of the first Austin Mini Cooper rolling of the line. And while these first 50 years have been historic, we’re already looking ahead to the next half-century of creative invention. So, in celebration of innovative spirits (we were the first to use a transverse engine, pushing wheels to the corners, go small when everyone else was big, meeting fuel and emissions standards years in advance) we’re asking you to imagine what the transportation of the might future look like in 50 years? Will we all have our own modern-day Pegasus -- genetically engineered horses with wings? Will we be shot through compressed-air tubes in personal pods? Will those jet-packs we ordered decades ago finally arrive? Massive human slingshots? Carbon-fiber kites for carrying the whole family? We’re seeking imaginative, unique visions for how humans might be getting around in 50 years or so. Hover-pods out of the latest sci-fi movie are welcome, but we’ll be scoring highest for ideas with a bit of whimsy, humor and originality of concept vs. pragmatic feasibility.

The Design: Ki Grid

Problem.

First and foremost in order to provide a solution we must recognize the problem with the current transportation system. The current system drains natural resources, pollutes the air, it is an inefficient & unsafe way of transporting our most prized possessions and people we love. Do to the illusion of control we must realize that not all drivers are in the right mind to be behind the wheel, accidents are unavoidable. Lets scratch the idea of control for a second and imagine a world where you can go out be driven to the destination you desire on your demand safely. Taxi? Limo? Trolley? Yes, but is there an easier, safer more direct way. The solution is rethinking of the current highway system and the vehicles as we know it.

Solution.

The Grid. Imagine a blank canvas and on it intersecting squares on which dots move around in patterns. The grid would consist of pathways that would web throughout our cities. Think of it like a metro, right below the surface we walk on, there would be underground grid with pods that would move freely north, south, east, and west @ speeds from 5-100mph. Pods (vehicles) that would be submerged in the ground mainly enclosed from 3 sides left, right and bottom, with the solar panel top exposed to the sky. Suspended in the 3 walled tunnel with magnetic levitation and propulsion, the pods move around the levels of the grid. The destination is chosen by the occupant, owner of the pod, (or user of the community pod, paying a modest fee, depending on the pod desired). The pods are square so they can fit on the grid an go right or left without having to rotate. Pods are size of a luxury suv, seating ranging from 2-8. The pods move in formations while keeping calculated distance, they separate at intersections depending on the occupants destination (pod to pod communication by onboard computer that works independently of the grid computer which acts as a backup). After the passenger is dropped off the pod returns into circulation of the grid or stays with the owner if owned. No need for luggage space, get another pod for transporting goods. The porter pod would tag along with you or deliver it later. Personal or business you can count on the pod. The roads of today will stay in existence but be occupied by “Segway type” cars, while roaming with the gas guzzlers which will be in limited numbers or running h20. You will drive your mini not because its the only way to get around but because you’re home after work and wanted to go for the joy of the drive. No more traffic, some roads wont exist and will be replaced by parks, shops, & lush gardens, that will help us give back to the planet we’ve taken from. The pods are a personal, safe, space saving, emission free, fast, cheap, luxurious, the most thoughtful yet thoughtless way of getting from A to B. Find the Pod at the future near you.
